The Challenge

Copper Mountain Ski Resort, nestled deep in the Colorado Rockies at an elevation of 9,700 feet, faces extreme weather conditions year-round. From intense UV exposure to high winds and snow accumulation, outdoor assets at the resort are constantly at risk of deterioration.

The resort was specifically looking for durable, cost-effective ways to protect their base village outdoor fire pits and shuffleboard court—two high-use, guest-facing amenities that needed long-term preservation.

Fire Pit Protection

To protect the fire pits, hexagonal in shape and fully exposed to the elements, Equip created custom-shaped covers using Speclok fabric, chosen for its superior UV resistance and durability. The design included:

• Hexagonal Shape: Matched the fire pit dimensions for a clean, tailored fit.

• Speclok Material: Offers outstanding UV protection, crucial at Copper’s elevation where UV radiation is nearly double that of sea level.

• Coates Nylon Thread: Used for its strength and weather resistance.

• Adjustable Shock Cord Drawstring: Sewn into the base of each cover to provide a secure fit, preventing the covers from lifting or blowing away during high mountain winds.

Shuffleboard Court Cover

The resort also faced issues with an existing shuffleboard court cover from another vendor. The non-breathable material used in that cover had caused moisture buildup and warping, damaging the asset it was meant to protect.

Equip engineered a better-performing replacement using the same Speclok material along with built-in risers to elevate the cover off the surface. This design allows airflow beneath the cover, which significantly reduces condensation and extends the life of the court.

Results

The project resulted in custom-fit covers designed specifically for the fire pits and shuffleboard court, ensuring full protection without compromising usability. Constructed from durable, breathable materials, the covers are engineered to withstand intense high-altitude UV exposure while allowing proper airflow to prevent moisture buildup on sensitive surfaces.
